How to Feed Hummingbirds Properly

The ruby-throated hummingbird is one of the most widely distributed of the more than 300 species of hummingbirds in the world. Given the wide variety of species, it's no wonder that feeding hummingbirds is one of the most popular forms of bird feeding in North America. Hummingbirds are only native to the Western Hemisphere.

On average, female hummingbirds are 15 to 25 percent larger than males. The larger size of females is believed to make them better able to incubate eggs and raise young. The smaller size of males is believed to help them escape or distract predators and perform ritualistic aerial courtship displays. Only adult males have the full red coloration, hence the name "ruby-throated hummingbird."

In order to properly feed ruby-throated hummingbirds, we need to know some basic information about them. Some of their characteristics are:
- Average length: about 9 centimeters from beak to tail
-Average weight: only about 1/8 ounce
-Their body temperature ranges from 105 to 108 degrees Fahrenheit (40.5 to 42 degrees Celsius).
-Their wings beat 40 to 80 times per second on average, about 52 times per second.
-Flight speed: normal 30 mph; 63 mph in a dive
-Diet: nectar and small insects, such as gnats, flies, and ants.
-Lifespan: Up to 12 years; average: 3 to 5 years

The ruby-throated hummingbird is often found in woodlands and grasslands, but it has also adapted well to areas of human development. The three most important factors for attracting hummingbirds are shelter, space, and food. Consequently, they are often found in suburban backyards with mature trees and shrubs and in heavily wooded parks and orchards.

Ruby-throated hummingbird foraging for food

Hummingbirds are very loyal to reliable foraging locations. Those that foraged in your backyard the previous year will return to feed the following year. If you haven't had success attracting hummingbirds, there are a few things you can do. Since male ruby-throated hummingbirds are very territorial, it is important to place multiple feeders. At SAMHEOUTDOOR, we have over 20 styles of hummingbird feeders. No matter which one you choose, it's important to keep your feeder clean. Moldy feeders can seriously impact the health of your hummingbirds and need to be cleaned regularly. Second, keep the nectar fresh. Keep the nectar fresh. Keep the nectar fresh. Hummingbirds are sensitive to fermented nectar and will avoid it.

When we talk to our customers, some of the most discussed and frequently asked questions about Hummingbird are as follows:

Q: Why do bees and wasps often "fight" with hummingbirds at feeders?

A: Use flat-top feeders that keep the nectar out of reach. Hummingbirds can reach in and get the nectar, but bees and wasps cannot. One feeder we recommend for this purpose is the SAMHEOUTDOOR Hummingbird Feeder. It is popular and successful at attracting hummingbirds. Another helpful tip is to hang a Waspinator near the feeder to scare off wasps and keep your entire backyard safe from these pests.

Q: How can I keep ants away from my bird feeder?

A: For hanging hummingbird feeders, you can easily prevent ants from reaching the feeder by setting up an ant moat hook above it. Fill it with water, and since ants can't swim, your feeder will stay clean and ant-free. If you have a window feeder, choose one with its own moat. At SAMHEOUTDOOR, we have many of these feeders, as well as moat hooks, to help keep your feeders free of ants.

Q: Where should I hang my hummingbird feeder?

A: Hummingbird feeders are typically hung lower than other bird feeders. It is best to hang them at about chest height since hummingbirds usually feed on flowers and shrubs at this height. Feeders should also be hung in a protected area. If you are using a window feeder, mount it no higher than two meters. If possible, apply a one-sided visual film to the inside of the window so that hummingbirds are not scared away by people or pets inside the house.

Q: Do hummingbirds prefer red bird feeders?

A: Yes, red is an effective color for attracting them. They can easily spot the color from high up when looking for food. However, due to the visual spectrum of insects, they cannot see red and are not attracted to red feeders. This eliminates competition for hummingbirds. One way to attract hummingbirds is to tie large red bows to trees in early spring. This is an effective way to attract hummingbirds from a distance.
