If you are a fan of chickadees and are drawn to their adorable appearance, you may be looking for tips on how to attract them to your yard. This should not be too difficult. The largest species in North America are often very curious and relatively fearless around humans, who are much larger than they are. Here are some tips to invite them into your surroundings.
1. The simplest approach is to serve their favorite dishes. Chickadees have a varied diet that includes seeds, nuts, berries, and insects. Their favorite berries are blueberries, serviceberries, and bayberries. They also enjoy peanuts, peanut butter, and suet mixtures. In winter, try using feed containing their favorite seeds, such as black oil, shelled, and gray-striped sunflower seeds, pine nuts, walnuts, birch nuts, ragweed, and hemlock seeds. We recommend using a tray, hopper, tube, or other feeder suitable for small birds, such as our cat bird feeder. During the nesting season, you will notice that chickadees are very busy, flying back and forth to feed their young insects, especially caterpillars and spiders.
2. Provide plant life similar to that in their natural habitat. If possible, beautify your yard with small trees and/or dense shrubs in which chickadees like to live. Some of their favorites are: Evergreens, maples, oaks, beeches, birches, and alders. They prefer to nest in tree cavities or holes, which they can dig deeper as needed. They may also move into a nesting box if the dimensions are approximately 8 x 5 x 5 inches, with an entrance hole of about 1 inch, and it is located 4 to 15 feet above ground level.
3. Provide plenty of clean, flowing water for bathing. I don't think there are any birds that dislike clean, flowing water. Provide shallow birdbaths and frequently change the water to keep it clean. Chickadees especially like hot water and fountains that make noise and move. Placing various water pumps in fountains or bathtubs is a good option.
